Microwave sintering of zirconia-toughened alumina – Influence of the materials’ composition and sintering cell

Résumé

Microwave (MW) sintering is a rapid sintering process in which the material heats by absorption of the electromagnetic energy. MW/material interactions mainly depend on the dielectric and electric properties of the system to heat, i.e., the material itself and also the sintering cell surrounding the material. Alumina and zirconia bioceramics have different dielectric properties. Alumina weakly couples with MW. Zirconia has temperature-dependent dielectric properties. Its chemical composition can have an influence (i.e., the dopants used to stabilize the tetragonal or cubic phases). Thus, Zirconia-Toughened Alumina (ZTA) is interesting to study MW/material interactions. The aim of this investigation was to study the effect of the materials’ composition on the MW/material interactions, in relation with the influence of the sintering cell. ZTA samples were prepared with various zirconia contents and types of zirconia (unstabilized and stabilized with 3 and 8 mol% Y2O3 and 10 mol% CeO2). The samples were sintered in a multimode cavity, inside a sintering cell with or without a SiC susceptor. All the samples were fully dense with fine microstructures. Small differences in the microstructure of the sintered samples were detected between the different compositions. The MW powers vs temperature and the densification vs temperature curves pointed out differences of behaviours related to the materials’ compositions. Shifts in the densification curves were detected for the samples sintered without SiC (in comparison with sintering with SiC). They depend on the material's composition. These results were confirmed by heating the samples in a single-mode cavity, which highlights better the different behaviours of the samples.
