Enhancing fine-grained access control in fog-based e-health applications

Résumé

Fog computing is an extension of Cloud computing to the edge of the network, developed especially for applications requiring localized data with very low retrieval latencies, such as e-health applications. Moreover, fog computing brings many advantages to e-health applications such as elastic management of computing and storage devices on-premises. This brings more availability, reliability and security to e-health applications. However, many challenges brake the widespread adoption of fog computing in e-health applications, such as: reduced capacity of some devices used specifically in patient health monitoring and the requirements relating to patient privacy protection. In this paper we present MABE (MetaAttributes Based Encryption), an approach that leverages fine-grained data access control by making it applicable to Fog environments where constrained devices are largely used. MABE is based on access policy reduction by replacing a set of attributes with a meta-attribute that infers them. The experiment results show that our solution considerably improves the computational time compared to CP-ABE and other existing solutions. Indeed, MABE presents better results in terms of encryption time, particularly for a large number of attributes, and very similar results as for decryption, while having the advantage of not using additional processing nodes (proxy re-encryption and outsourced decryption) as is the case in many existing solutions.
