Politics of expertise

Résumé

This chapter presents the themes upon which researchers in the field have collectively worked to shed light, from different angles, on the politics of expertise. The deconstruction of the myth of expertise that Science and Technology Studies (STS) engages in also involves highlighting the effects on science of the involvement of experts in the public arenas where socio-technical controversies unfold. STS aims to rehabilitate the public's own rationality and to actively contribute to the search for new modalities of technical democracy, combining consultation with experts and public participation in collective decisions. STS in recent years has been particularly marked by renewed questions relating to the conflicts and power relations that might be aroused by so-called “participatory” or citizen sciences. Scientific credibility is constructed in real time, with much stronger implications for the public perception of scientists and the construction of their reputation.
