Immersive haptic simulation for motor skill acquisition in preclinical prosthetic dentistry: A randomized comparative study

Background: Recent research suggests that combining haptic and conventional simulation enhances motor skill acquisition in fixed prosthodontics 1-3 . However, no study has yet evaluated the impact of immersive haptic simulation in preclinical prosthetic dentistry. This study investigates the effect of using the VirTeaSy Dental ® haptic simulator combined with a virtual reality (VR) headset on student performance during conventional fixed prosthodontics simulation.
Methods: Eighty-five novice students from the Nantes University Faculty of Dentistry were randomly assigned to two groups. In Phase 1, the control group (G1, n=42) participated in conventional simulation sessions, while the test group (G2, n=43) received a combination of immersive haptic and conventional simulation. In Phase 2, each group was subdivided: G1a and G2a (conventional simulation), G1b and G2b (combined simulation). At the end of each phase, students' performances were assessed based on single-unit prosthetic preparations, graded using prepCheck® 3.0, and compared between groups and subgroups using both parametric (T-test) and non-parametric (Mann-Whitney U) tests.
In Phase 1, the average prosthetic preparation quality scores were slightly higher in the test group (17.19 ±1.53) compared to the control group (16.55 ±1.80), but the difference was not statistically significant (P > 0.05). In Phase 2, subgroup performances were also similar
