Perspectives on the typology of linguistic numerations
Résumé
To describe linguistic numerations and classify their types, we need to clarify the properties of two sets of words within number names: digit cycles and pivots. These are defined in relation to a morphosyntax-that is, a set of tools used to combine them. Furthermore, the flexibility of this morphosyntax-within pragmatic or cognitive boundaries-can be understood through the concept of languaging: the dynamic use of language to create and mediate meaning rather than viewing language as a fixed system. This concept encompasses processes such as on-the-spot creativity, cultural development and language planning-all of which play a role in the linguistic expressions of numbers.
