Gateways or Globalization Taking Place(s)
Résumé
Gateways are pivotal vectors of globalization, offering a concrete grasp of how this puzzling planetary process shapes places and territories. Gateways often refer to very large infrastructures engaged in intense international relations. This chapter stresses the importance of all actors shaping gateways and of their spatialities, whether when practicing them or when holding responsibility over them, as gatekeepers. It examines the various modalities through which these places are assembled, identifying the components, networks and practices involved. The chapter discusses the challenges raised by these gateways and their protagonists, from attracting flows to being vulnerable to multiple risks, by building on these observations. The presence or absence of transportation and logistics infrastructures, the diversity of mobilities, the range of activities and the characteristics of the practices involved are four criteria that enable us to grasp what takes place in these globalized gateways.
