Jet lag, circadian disturbances and athlete health

Résumé

The behavior and physiology of living systems are synchronized by the 24-hour rotation of the Earth. Modern transport causes desynchronization in relation to the light-dark cycle of the environment. The resulting jet lag syndrome and travel fatigue can have adverse consequences for the individual. In this article, circadian disturbances due to jet-lag and fatigue due to air travel are reported for athletes and their teams. The potential consequences on their health and sports performance are described, as well as the strategies for both the assessment and management of jet-lag and travel fatigue.
