Information and Communication Sciences in France: Disciplinary Development and Research Dynamics
Résumé
This research provided a compilation and review based on three materials from the French High Council for the Evaluation of Research and Higher Education (Hcéres), the Permanent Conference of Heads of French Research Units in Information and Communication Sciences (CPDirSIC), and the leading journal Hermès, la revue. It traced the historical development and current key issues of information and communication sciences (SIC) in France. Since its formal establishment as an independent discipline in 1974, SIC has evolved from its early stage of combining journalism education and informatics. Through interdisciplinary integration, it has gradually developed a comprehensive academic system and research framework. Today, research in this field encompasses 10 core areas, including media and journalism, organizational communication, cultural industries, digital strategies, and knowledge organization. French SIC places significant emphasis on uncovering the complex interplay between information dissemination, social structures, and cultural forms, while balancing theory and practice. The article concluded by reviewing recent explorations by French scholars into China’s information and communication research, covering topics such as China’s media ecology and applications of digital technologies. These studies not only deepen the understanding of communication phenomena in China but also provide valuable perspectives and insights for Sino-French academic exchange and global communication research.
