The evolution of the consular network of the People’s Republic of China (1949-2024)

The aim of this post is to provide a preliminary overview of the consulates established by the People’s Republic of China (PRC) abroad since its foundation in October 1949. This 75-year period is divided into four parts, corresponding to different phases in the evolution of the network. Our presentation is supplemented with chronological tables and figures, summarising the development trends and all the consulates and consulates general established in various foreign cities. If a consular post has closed, either temporarily or permanently, at the time of writing in January 2025, this is systematically indicated in the comments column, with the closure year noted.
