User-centered personalized gamification: an umbrella review

Résumé

Gamification, or the way of designing gameful experience in non-game context, has been studied for over a decade. Still, the idea of gamification personalized to the user is emerging and has been the subject of various reviews. This emergence underscores the importance of a synthesis of this research. The study focuses on four key research questions: (RQ1) What are the game design elements used to propose personalized gamification? (RQ2) What are the user characteristics used to perform user-centered personalized gamification? (RQ3) What are the outcomes of user-centered personalized gamification? (RQ4) What are the methods employed to evaluate game elements to personalize gamification? Following the PRISMA statement, three databases were searched (Scopus, IEEEXplore and ACM Digital Library) from which thirteen reviews were considered following our selection criteria. The analysis lists the game design elements found in the reviews. Most reviews focused on user modeling methods, particularly emphasizing on player typologies, personality traits, and learning styles. Concerning outcomes, more attention is given toward evaluating the impact on the user and their performance in an activity, while less attention is given to the evaluation of the system and its efficiency compared to other forms of gamification. Lastly, we investigate the evaluation methods, highlighting the need for greater detail in describing them. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of user-centered personalized gamification besides showing the future interests in the domain. Finally, a research agenda is presented based on our results on the game design elements, the user characteristics and the evaluation methods.
