Vector mutate

Les vecteurs mutent

Résumé

In A Hacker Manifesto, McKenzie Wark offered a theory of antagonist classes facing each other over information. Information, produced by social cooperation and intellectual work, is a new subject of extraction of value and exploitation. In the book, she describe the central role of “intellectual property” (IP) for the vectoralist class to monopolize, reify and commodify the information that the hacker class produces. In this article we want to contextualize the focus on IP and explore how the shift from IP to new forms of value extraction has been an important mutation of vectors in the last 25 years. Therefore a paradox emerges: since the rise of large platforms, the vectoralist class seems to have found an even more concrete embodiment. At the same time, the central role of IP in the extraction of value has dropped — although mostly regarding the contents, as these actors fight each other quite hard on patents regarding their hardware and software. If the vectoralists can mutate, hackers should consider altering the counter-strategy. Where free licenses were part of the answer to IP lock down, there are new ways to explore for the hackers to take back control of the vectors.
