Indirect exchange interactions in semimetals
Résumé
The indirect exchange interaction between localized spins and nuclear spins through conduction electrons is discussed in connection with the interband susceptibility in semimetals. A simple calculation is performed for a model band structure where the valence band and the conduction band are separated by a vector Q in reciprocal space. An additional internal field superimposed to the RKKY field is derived. The short-wavelength modulation of the new mechanism provides a magnetic decoupling for nuclei close to paramagnetic centers, inhibiting the spin diffusion process. It is suggested that Ytterbium could be a good nucleus for the observation of interband mechanisms in NMR.
