Agri-food system transition in Central Asia: New perspectives for research
Résumé
Human activities have led to the overstepping of several planetary limits, but they must also face up to the challenges of social equity, both within and between countries (Leach et al. 2013). In this respect, agri-food systems (AFS) represent three challenges: 1) they are strongly affected by global environmental changes, 2) they are a factor of these changes and 3) they are closely linked to questions of justice through their role in the production, processing and distribution of food, but also as providers of employment and economic growth. They therefore offer an opportunity to reconnect fields of research that have his-torically been disconnected (Rockström et al. 2020). This literature review explores the transition of AFS in Central Asia, highlighting their vul-nerability to global changes and their critical role in achieving social equity and sustaina-bility. The review synthesizes research on AFS components—agriculture, natural resource management, agrarian policy, and supply chains—focusing on Kyrgyzstan. Utilizing the socio-technical transitions framework by Geels (2002) and enriched by perspectives on governance and spatial dynamics, the review identifies the absence of comprehensive studies on AFS transitions in the region. It underscores the existing work on economic transitions, resource management models, and the multi-scale governance affecting AFS. The findings emphasize the need for interdisciplinary research to address the unique socio-economic and environmental challenges in Central Asia, proposing new avenues for understanding AFS transitions towards sustainability.
