Borders and Lines of Fracture: John Burnside, Roseanne Watt and Havergey

Résumé

This chapter examines Roseanne Watt’s filmpoems, in particular “Havergey” which is a transmedial and mutlimedial adaptation of John Burnside’s 2017 novels of the same title. Also relying on some other of Watt’s filmpoems, such as “Quoys, Unst” or “Sullom”, it explores how Watt’s works implement what Edouard Glissant calls a poetics of relation and a poetics of language. But the connection with Burnside’s works also leads Watt to ecopoetics and ecopolitics, to provide her own vision of nature, the wilderness, emplacement, of history and of the necessary adjustments in the relation of the human and the non-human, to convey what comes across as the “spirit of the place”.
