Egyptian Glass Fourth to Sixth Centuries

Résumé

Glass production in the Dakhleh Oasis, Egypt, during the fourth to sixth century CE is reviewed. The compositions of cobalt- and copper-based blue glass sherds, together with other glass sherds and two black glass bracelets have been analysed using Raman spectroscopy and electron microscopy. In addition, the composition of blue and green bracelets dated to post tenth century CE and discovered at Qasr al-Dakhleh are also reported. Glass working is thus determined and which also tentatively indicates that glass production may also have occurred at this Oasis. The mineralogy of the orange and yellow decoration applied to the blue and green bracelets has been determined.
