Questioning the concept of aspect when applied to English.

Résumé

Most grammarians today rely on the concept of « aspect » to account for the differences between simple and progressive in English. But for quite some time now research has shown that everyday occurrences just cannot be accounted for by using traditional rules based on how actions in the real world are viewed, which is what aspect based analyses are all about. Sentences in the simple present are thus used to denote ponctual events or actions in progress, when sentences in the progressive (be+ing) can denote permanent situations, among other uses. Calling those sentences that do not fall under the rules « exceptions » is not satisfactory at all. There cannot be any exceptions in grammar. The purpose of our presentation, using authentic everyday contexts and not made up sentences to fit the rules, is to present a different way of tackling the grammatical problems at stake. New concepts will be used to account for the system that hides behind the choice of grammatical items.
