Special Issue Guest Editorial Entrepreneurship Under Adversity: Mapping Definitions, Boundaries, and Future Research

Résumé

Entrepreneurship under a multitude of adverse conditions continues to garnet increased, interdisciplinary scholarly attention. Theoretical gaps and intellectual curiosity, combined with the observation of the practice of entrepreneurship in diverse contexts across the globe, provide a fertile landscape for scholarly inquiry. While fascinating and important, the rapid growth of work in adversity-related contexts, situations, or events leads to a fragmentation of the field, with differing nomenclatures being used to describe a plethora of phenomena that are sometimes fundamentally different and other times one and the same (viz., inclusive entrepreneurship, necessity entrepreneurship, underdog entrepreneurship, poverty entrepreneurship, transitional entrepreneurship, disadvantaged entrepreneurship, and entrepreneurship for minorities, among others). As this fertile landscape of ideas continues to grow, a crucial question arises: Do these terms refer to similar or different phenomena? More specifically, to what extent do these relate to different types of entrepreneurship, or do they share common boundaries and similar challenges? What are the conceptual boundaries of these themes, and where and how do they overlap?
