Renormalization of transverse hopping integral in quasi-1D conductors

Résumé

Using renormalization group arguments, we discuss the electronic polaronic effect in the inter-chain motion of electrons in quasi-one-dimensional conductors. We show that there is important renormalization in the inter-chain tunneling matrix element t{raising sign} beyond the more usual intra-chain density of states argument. It originates from quantum transverse fluctuations in the single-particle motion which produce a lateral growth of the polarization cloud. As a consequence, t{raising sign} can be greatly reduced and may even become irrelevant in the thermodynamic sense in a sufficiently correlated electron gas.
