Heuristic based decision approach for an integrated slurry pipeline network scheduling in the phosphate industry

Résumé

This paper deals with an integrated supply chain scheduling problem in the context of the mining industry. In a manufacturing phosphate supply chain, the integration of production and transport scheduling for continuous delivery of phosphate products to customers is a critical task. A feasible scheduling solution must specify the type and quantity of products and the start and end times of production and transportation operations while respecting the entirety of the industry-specific constraints. Due to the complexity of the industrial problem, manual scheduling is operational only in a short-term scheduling horizon and often leads to short-sighted solutions or an impasse in problem-solving. Scheduling variables and constraints make manual scheduling almost impossible for mid-term and long-term horizons. In this work, a discrete-time simulation-based heuristic is proposed for an integrated supply chain scheduling problem, including several production units, a pipeline network transportation system, and several multi-product-sensitive storage centers. The proposed approach was evaluated using a real-world case study under different scenarios over a horizon of 2 weeks. The experimental results show that the proposed approach provides desirable scheduling solutions in a reasonable CPU time. Moreover, the proposed heuristic gives satisfying results after 8 months of operating under real-world conditions.
