Functional clothing, an overlooked source of persistent textile fibers in the global microplastic pollution
Résumé
Millions of microplastics are produced in one washing machine cycle, and laundry is a major contributor of microfibers in the oceans. Here we discuss microplastic pollution with focus on textile shedding by functional clothing, the influence of plastic properties and washing conditions, the incomplete removal of microfibers by sewage treatment plants, the role of some microfibers as potential chemical sinks for other contaminants, and other under-investigated scenarios of microfiber shedding from clothing and textiles.
