Budding of the Cultivated Fig onto the Seedling and Cutling Rootstocks Produced from the Wild Fig (Ficus carica L.)

Résumé

In addition to being used for food, wild figs (Ficus carica L.) can also be used as a rootstock for cultivated figs (Ficus carica L.). In this study, wild fig rootstock was produced from seeds and hardwood cuttings. Seeds were sown at different times (December 1st, January 1st, February 1st and March 1st). The cuttings were taken with different diameters (7–8, 9–10 and 11–12mm) and then treated with various concentrations of IBA (0, 2000 and 4000ppm IBA). Rootstocks produced from seeds and cuttings were T-budded in late summer at different times (August 20th, September 1st and September 10th). The highest germination rates (88.89% and 84.4%) were recorded owing to sowing the seeds on January 1st and December 1st, but sowing the seeds on March 1st resulted in the lowest germination (37.78%). The best rooting (68.89%) was found in the cuttings taken at 7–8mm diameters, in contrast, the least rooting (48.89%) was recorded in the cuttings taken at 9–10mm diameters. IBA concentrations were ineffective in improving rooting percentage in the wild fig, whereas 2000ppm IBA enhanced the number of roots (14.45), root length (19.41 cm), shoot length (4.37 cm), the number of leaves (5.45), and leaf area (42.85cm2). Interaction of 7–8mm diameter cuttings with 2000ppm IBA showed the best rooting (80%). Budding the cultivated fig onto the wild fig rootstocks was successful. However, neither the effect of rootstock type (seedling and cutling) nor budding dates were not significant on the budding success percentage and other measured traits. It can be deduced from the results of this study that seed germination of wild fig can be increased by sowing the seeds earlier in cold months. Rooting of wild fig hardwood cuttings strongly depends on cutting diameter but not IBA treatment. Additionally, the wild fig can be successfully used as a rootstock for budding the cultivated figs.
