Attributing some Carian incertii

Résumé

The past fifteen years or so have seen a dramatic increase in the number of new Greek coin types from Asia Minor. Caria, in particular, has yielded a bountiful crop of unpublished coins, most of which are silver fractions found with metal detectors. Some of these new finds provide valuable evidence for attributing, or at least localising, coins of previously uncertain origin. In the case of the Halikarnassos peninsula and its neighbouring region in the fourth century BC, we now have an entirely different picture of coin minting and circulation. Coins with legends in the Carian script have also surfaced, and, in some instances, it is possible to put forward convincing attributions based on the new decipherment of Carian proposed since the 1980s. Work carried out in the Archaeological Museums of Milas and Bodrum has also helped our attribution task. There are a few problematic cases that cannot be, at this point, resolved, but they will be presented in the hope that future finds will shed some light on them.
