Radiobiology platform for carbon Flash research at GANIL

Background and Aims The Center for Interdisciplinary Research with Heavy Ions (CIRIL) is the platform for all the interdisciplinary experiments carried out with the beams of the GANIL (Large National Accelerator of Heavy Ions). Since 1982, this platform, managed by the CIMAP laboratory (Research Center on Ions, Materials and Photonics), aims to welcome experimenters from all over the world, to ensure the development of equipment adapted to proposed experiments. The iRiA, Irradiations for Radiobiology with Accelerated Ions platform (1), is devoted to the studies of ion beams effects on biological systems. The platform includes a comprehensive and state-of-the-art L2 cell culture room and a biochemistry laboratory, allowing hosted teams to perform various radiation biology experiments. Methods Since two years, researchers, engineers and technician from Caen laboratories set up a new system compatible with ultra-high dose rate (UHDR) irradiations, notably with the shaping of the carbon ion beam in the form of pulses of a few milliseconds and corresponding to a dose rate of at least 50 Gy/s. Our objective is to evaluate in vitro the biological effect of UHDR irradiation with carbon ions on different types of cancerous and healthy cells. Results We propose to display in details the high-energy beam line used for UHDR irradiations at GANIL. We will describe the different on-line devices, the remotely controlled sample holder for radiation biology and the radiation biology platform. All these systems are already open for guest teams using standard dose rate (1), the beam line capacities will be extended to UHDR in a next future. Conclusion Our objective is to allow in the coming months external projects dedicated for UHDR studies with carbon ions at GANIL.
