Résumé

Given the global challenges of recruitment and retention of sport referees, supporting their skill enhancement and personal development remain crucial areas for sport organizations. Some current knowledge can be used to build programs. However, the sparse development literature on sport referees has mainly evolved to initially focus on soccer contexts, physical preparation, and isolated-training approaches for decision-making skills. Many development areas remain neglected that emphasise testing of evidenced-based educational strategy and training approach in other refereeing areas. We explain current models of referee development, documented influences on expertise development in referees, contemporary training perspectives, and modes of learning for referees. We introduce future directions for new research on development that can inform referee education guidelines and strategy developed from further researchers, practitioners and governing sport body exchanges.
