Le corps du roi Thésée dans la mise en scène de Patrice Chéreau de Phèdre de Jean Racine : figurer l’impuissance d’un puissant.
Résumé
Based on Françoise Zamour’s reflection, this paper aims to analyze how the French director Patrice Chéreau stages Theseus’ powerlessness in Jean Racine’s Phèdre.
Dressed in red, the monarch appears bent and broken. He is a tragic hero who has sacrificed his son on the altar of slander and silence. Such a reading allows me to question the issue of the embodiment of power. I will study the character’s progress, to show how royal haughtiness gradually gives way to the sadness and distress resulting from the death of a young man wrongly accused of a fallacious speech.
