Court (imperial), Roman

Résumé

The imperial court, whose composition remained informal and was not legally defined, was made up of people of very varied status who had direct access to the person of the emperor. The emperor's servants, who were very numerous, held highly specialised positions. Members of the elite of society, senators and knights, belonged to his close entourage and could act as advisors to the emperor.
