Found in Translation: Translating Thomas McGrath's LETTER TO AN IMAGINARY FRIEND
Résumé
Kate Briggs’s This Little Art and Daniel Hahn’s Catching Fire will serve as the basis for, and backbone to, this presentation on my translation of Thomas McGrath’s long poem.
I chose friendship and friendliness as the threads running through the first part of this talk, focusing on the relational aspects of (this) translation. I will then move on to the nuts and bolts of the ‘exercise’: the preparation for it, the technolects involved, the pleasures found in making a copy of this text in a different language, and the post-partum regrets.
“[W]hat I am seeking, Hahn writes, is fidelity to what I imagine to be the source text’s effect.” A bilingual reading of two passages by the undoubtedly bilingual audience might be a friendly
opportunity to discuss the inevitable distance that remains between expectations and outcomes.
