EXCEPTIONALLY-PRESERVED ECHINODERMS FROM THE MIOCENE OF LUBERON (SE FRANCE)

Bioclastic limestones from the Upper Burdigalien (Miocene) of the Luberon (Vaucluse, southeastern France) have been exploited in large, open-air quarries in the Ménerbes-Lacoste area, in the Apt Basin. These molassic levels yielded remarkably well-preserved dense assemblages of benthic invertebrates, comprising primarily bivalves (e.g., the large pectinid Gigantopecten restitutensis) and echinoderms, associated with barnacles and bryozoans, as well as algae and trace fossils (e.g., borings made by worms and cliones). The echinoderm community is particularly diverse and comprises both regular (e.g., Tripneustes planus) and irregular (e.g., Plagiobrissus imbricatus) echinoids, asteroids (e.g., solasterids) and ophiuroids (e.g., gorgonocephalids), as well as comatulids (e.g., Discometra luberonensis). Most echinoderm specimens are fully articulated, almost intact, although very slightly crushed. Sea urchins still have their Aristotle's lanterns and spines, while asteroids, ophiuroids and comatulids still retain their delicate ossicles in anatomical connection. The taphonomy and paleoecology of this echinoderm Lagerstätte are investigated, based on new field observations and careful examinations of the abundant material deposited in both public and private collections. Bivalves, echinoids and comatulids have already been studied while asteroids and ophiuroids are described for the first time thanks to classical optical observations and more innovative 3D imagery techniques (e.g., X-ray microtomography).
