A mechanical model for a mechanistic understanding of the effects of physical factors on planktonic interactions

Résumé

Planktonic organisms have to live in a barely-structured physical environment. They have to feed, survive and reproduce in a space with little refuges, screens or microhabitats. Therefore, they are open to the effects of mechanical factors (turbulence, gravity, density, viscosity), in addition to a few other structural factors that vary dramatically along the vertical dimension of the water column such as light and temperature. But rather than being the plaything of their environment, planktonic organisms have developed morphological and behavioural adaptations allowing them to thrive in this open space, and reach their resources. Given the mechanical nature of these effects, and relying on the existing decades of biophysical studies focussed on the plankton, we are building a mechanistic model of the plankton centred around on their movement and interactions. This model allows gathering within one framework the influence of the most important physical factors of their environment (gravity, density, viscosity, turbulence, light availability and temperature) with the morphological and behavioural adaptations of the diverse phytoplankton species. Preliminary results are encouraging, as they open the door to a mechanistic understanding of the structure and stability of planktonic food webs.
