How Do Active Chain Density and Cross-Link Length Influence the Mullins Softening in Filled and Unfilled Natural Rubbers?

Résumé

The present study addresses the effect of the active chain density and cross-link length on the Mullins effect in both carbon black (CB) filled and unfilled natural rubber (NR). A wide range of vulcanization system, i.e., sulphur (S) and accelerator (A) contents has been considered in order to ensure significant variations of active chain density, coupled with different content ratios ([A]/[S]) to change the sulphur cross-link length; it corresponds to conventional vulcanization (CV) for predominantly polysulphide crosslinks, semi-efficient vulcanization (SEV) for mono, di, and poly-sulphide cross-links, and efficient vulcanization (EV) for predominantly monosulphide cross-links. In addition, different vulcanization conditions, corresponding to various time and temperature, were investigated. Equilibrium swelling tests were performed in order to determine the active chain density by using the Flory-Rehner relationship. A correction was applied to account for the insoluble components. Uniaxial cyclic tension tests were carried out at increasing level of stretches. The results of these investigations showed that the active chain density has a significant effect for unfilled NR. The effect of the cross-link length was found negligible. As expected, the active chain density showed much lesser effect for filled NR. The vulcanization conditions showed no significant impact, for both temperature and time of vulcanization. Finally, a comparison between CB filled and unfilled NR is made, and a discussion about the physical explanation for both results is provided.
