Nutraceutical Capacities of Extracts from the Invasive Plants Ambrosia Artemisiifolia and Solidago Canadensis

Two invasive plants Ambrosia artemisiifolia and Solidago canadensis were investigated for their antioxidant and anti-lipase capacities. The results revealed that the aerial and root parts of A. artemisiifolia and S. canadensis were strong antioxidants. S. canadensis was a better anti-lipase agent than A. artemisiifolia although A. artemisiifolia had an ability to inhibit pancreatic lipase (PL) similar to orlistat. At 100 µg/mL, the percentages of PL inhibition of APS, RPS and orlistat were 49.6 ± 5.9%, 82.3 ± 0.2% and 11.2 ± 5.0 %, respectively. Main antioxidant markers highlighting by HPTLC-DPPH, present in all the crude extracts, were identified as phenolic acids then monitored by UHPLC-UV-Q-TOF-HRMS and evaluated as PL inhibitors. The effectiveness of extracts was then correlated with their chemical compositions. Invasive plants could be used as nutraceutical agents to alleviate various pathologies resulting from oxidative stress, including obesity.
