Do we increase our understanding of how a technology works by explaining it to others?

Résumé

Teaching refers to any behavior or behavioral modification that aims to facilitate learning in others. Explaining something to someone is a form of teaching. Therefore, explaining as any form of teaching can be considered as first and foremost altruistic because the immediate benefit is for the learner, not the teacher. However, it is also known that explanations can be useful to detect an incompleteness in our understanding. The feedback provided by others can also be particularly useful in this way. In other words, explaining can also be beneficial for the teacher. The goal of the present study is to explore this possibility by testing whether the fact of explaining how a technology works to a naïve individual, who has no experience with the technology (unilateral-explanation condition) leads to an increase in understanding compared to a control condition (no-explanation condition). We will also include a condition in which both individuals will have experience with the technology (bilateral-explanation condition). Thus, we will test whether the potential increase in understanding reported in the unilateral-explanation condition is comparable to the potential increase in understanding in a bilateral-explanation condition.
