Preserving or discarding metrical patterns in Sanskrit-Prākrit translations? An overview
Résumé
Certain classical Indian literary works employ metrical patterns based on syllable count and length. When translating these works between Sanskrit and Middle Indic for recitation, it's crucial to maintain these patterns. While Middle Indic languages are somewhat more flexible than Sanskrit, translating meter accurately remains challenging. If the primary goal is comprehension, translators may opt for a prose commentary that disregards meter. This approach is common in Sanskrit translations (chāyā) of Prakrit dramatic texts. This paper examines various Sanskrit and Middle Indic translations to investigate whether translators prioritized meter preservation and, if not, the reasons behind their decision.
