Résumé

The exploration of biomass conversion through heterogeneous catalysts has captured considerable interest, primarily owing to its capacity for transforming biomass into valuable chemicals, thereby offering a viable alternative to fossil fuels. Erythritol, a naturally occurring polyol commonly present in various fruits and fermented foods, is of particular interest. Various catalysts have been developed for the hydrogenolysis of this sugar to lower its oxygen content, introducing a competitive landscape between C—C and C—O hydrogenolysis pathways and the dehydration reaction. It has been reported that monometallic systems lack a distinct preference for C—O bond reactivity, but the synergy of bimetallic catalysts, featuring a noble metal for hydrogen activation and an oxophilic promoter for erythritol adsorption, has demonstrated significant effectiveness. To reduce our reliance on these noble and costly metals, our goal is to explore substitute options. Transition metal carbides are attractive alternatives due to their combination of metallic and acidic sites, which impart catalytic properties resembling those of the platinum group, as initially observed by Boudart. Moreover, they have shown promise as catalysts for biomass transformations, including the direct catalytic conversion of cellulose into ethylene glycol, the hydrogenation of succinic acid to butyric acid, and various other reactions. Consequently, our goal is to investigate these carbides in the hydrogenolysis of erythritol to examine their activity and selectivity toward the resulting products.
