Résolution des litiges commerciaux et circulations transnationales au début du XVIIIe siècle: l’affaire Pimenta-Nunes Pereira

Résumé

The case study considered in this article revolves around the figure of Diego Nunes Pereira, a Portuguese New Christian tax farmer who decides to flee Lisbon in 1703 with his six children as the threat posed by the Inquisition becomes graver, and to settle in Bordeaux. After focusing on the circumstances of his departure, the article follows a decade long series of legal procedures, undertaken in Lisbon, but also in localities where he owns merchandise, money and has correspondents— Marseille and La Rochelle—that he funds from Bordeaux. Among the questions raised in the series of legal procedures that end in jurisdictional conflicts—all the way up to the Conseil privé (Privy Council), the most important one is to decide whether he should be considered a foreigner or not, at a time when Jews have no legal standing yet, even in Bordeaux.
