Spaces of urban discontinuity and civic continuity in the cities of the Roman West
Espacios de discontinuidad urbana y continuidad cívica en las ciuitates del Occidente romano
Résumé
The focus of this proposal is on ciuitates with urban agglomerations, leaving aside those civic communities that did not have urban forms. Taking into consideration the linguistic complexity and the various meanings of the Latin word ciuitas, along with others, throughout the text I will use ‘city and civic community’ as the expression closest to ciuitas (the whole of the urban agglomeration and its aggregated territory together with the civic community attached to it) while, to refer to cities and urban nuclei, I will preferably use the word ‘agglomeration’, understood as urban agglomeration.
