Genome Invasion Dynamics

Résumé

This chapter focuses on transposable elements (TE) dynamics in eukaryotic sexual species and describes TE dynamics in asexuals. The analysis of genome content suggests that most TE families do not persist in a long-term equilibrium state. Indeed, for many TE families, only relic (degraded) sequences can be found, indicating that the TE is no longer able to transpose. Genome invasion starts from a single copy in a single individual, being transmitted subsequently across generations, along with the rest of the genome. There is a wide diversity of TEs and transposition mechanisms. Traditionally, TEs are classified into two classes: Class I TEs are retrotransposons, in which transposition relies on an RNA intermediate, and Class II TEs, in which DNA physically changes location in the genome. While natural selection and regulation can limit the spread of active TEs, long-surviving TE sequences accumulate mutations and become degraded, which can also modify the activity level of TEs.
