The socio-economic models of associations: the case of amateur sport clubs in Hauts-de-France

Résumé

Studies carried out on amateur sport clubs focus exclusively on their economic model, without taking into account the associative project, human resources and alliances with their ecosystem. Current literature encourages us to go beyond the notion of economic model and consider the broader notion of socio-economic model. The participatory research carried out with stakeholders in the Hauts de France sports movement enabled data to be collected from a sample of 1046 sports associations. Descriptive statistics and various statistical tests revealed links between different variables and the amateur sport club’s budget. The main results show how human resources, the profile of the President and alliances with the ecosystem are essential to ensure a level of financial resources necessary for the development of the association’s project and the association’s sustainability. The study provides a better understanding of the socio-economic models of amateur sport clubs in a little-investigated sector, that of sport. From a managerial point of view, this research should help associations to respond more effectively to the challenges and crises they face. The sport institutions involved should find ways of defining support and guidance policies adapted to each model.
