Résumé

The interaction between positive ions and molecular targets is an important process in several areas of physics, biology, and chemistry. Negative ion formation in such processes is scarcely studied, however, we have found experimentally that it is a general process for few-keV projectile ions colliding on different molecular targets. This impact energy range is typical for solar wind and magnetospheric ions, which implies that anions can be efficiently formed in cometary and planetary atmospheres due to solar wind ion impact. We have measured absolute cross sections for the emission of all positively and negatively charged fragments from different H-containing target molecules and molecular projectile ions, differential in both energy and observation angle. A striking feature is that hydrogen anions and cations are emitted with similar distributions, with a nearly constant ratio of about 1:100 independent on the emission energy and angle. This finding indicates that in molecular fragmentation induced by slow singly-charged ions, the charge states of the emitted hydrogen fragments follow a simple statistical distribution independent of the way they are formed. As an example anion production in Titan’s upper atmosphere is estimated by our measured cross sections, showing that direct anion production by cation collision has to be considered in astrophysical environments.
