Strategies for urban space appropriation. The case of Collages Féminicides Paris

Les stratégies d'appropriation de l'espace urbain. Le cas de Collages Féminicides Paris

Résumé

In June 2020, a colleuse from Collages Féminicides Paris (CFP) pasted : “« So, whose street is it? » From a cop after throwing me to the ground." She denounces the violence she suffered after sticking "The street is ours". CFP is a movement that condemns patriarchal violence through messages written on city walls. The activists are women and gender minorities who are requesting equality in the streets, challenging gender domination and transgressing the public-private dichotomy of gender norms (Bondi, 1998). Two main issues about collages can be addressed. First, the activists seek to claim urban space, by occupying and transforming the streets illegally. The content of the messages is also at stake: by writing "The street is ours", activists state their wish for appropriation at the same time as they accomplish it. Enunciation is performative (Austin, 1962). In the first part of this presentation, I will analyze the colleureuses strategies for reclaiming urban space, and observe how they are determined by Parisian neighborhoods sociology. The second issue is the resistance the colleureuses have to face. Resistance comes from both citizens and institutions, and take various forms: verbal threats, physical aggression, fines. I will analyze how collages geography and practices of intimidation are closely intertwined. Moreover, collage-makers have to deal with the fear of threat in different ways, depending on their location that determines the opponent’s legitimacy in asserting their disagreement, and therefore the intensity of the opposition.
