“We’re not Immigrants!” The Social History of a Unique Migrant Population
Résumé
This article introduces issue 42 of the journal Moussons, which explores migration from Southeast Asia to Europe, and more specfically to France. It looks back at the circumstances surrounding the departure and arrival of refugees in the 1980s and 1990s, the reception and integration policies developed at that time, and the conditions under which families settled in a context hostile to foreigners. The processes of adaptation and acculturation were supported by a wide range of associations. The second part of this paper looks at outcomes for the new generations of these refugee families, amid renewed mobilization by associations, which are now more focused on anti-racism and the artistic expression of a neglected memory.
