Reviewing an emblematic marker: nuances of gammon across contact varieties
Résumé
In post-colonial Indigenous language landscapes, English-lexified creoles and Indigenised Englishes share some grammatical features and some lexical items, which are often considered emblematic of Aboriginal English(es). One such item is gammon, which features somewhat prominently in media representations of Aboriginal English(es) with meanings such as ‘pretence’, ‘lie’ and ‘deception’. The form gemen also occurs in Kriol in the Katherine Region, NT, albeit with distinctive meanings, namely a/ ‘illusion and false beliefs’ and b/ evidential marker of ‘hearsay’. In this talk we compare gemen in first-hand Kriol data (Barunga region and Binjari community) with gammon in Aboriginal English(es) in media or other corpora.
