“Audience fragmentation and political polarisation in the US: The Good Fight and the Donald Trump emergency.”

Résumé

This paper investigates political polarisation in the US and the fragmentation of society into diverse groups with a focus on how these phenomena reciprocally affect the production and reception of contemporary televised content. Due to a decline in the televised content that targets mass audiences, viewers are becoming more likely to cluster together with those who have similar viewing preferences. However, I argue that during this time of ‘cultural fragmentation,’ contemporary televised content is not only contributing to viewers increasingly ‘[existing] in a fragmented realm of niches and subcultures’ (Chayka, 2019) but is also contributing to the phenomenon of political polarisation and to the fragmented nature of US society in general. This paper thus investigates the urgency of the issue of political polarisation and the role that entertainment media plays regarding this issue in today’s divided society.
