Neurochemical concomitants of type I conditioning in bees
Although equipped with a relatively simple nervous system, a bee in restraint learns very quickly to recognize an odor associated with a food source (Takeda, I 961, Bitterman et al., I 983).
The extension of the proboscis, triggered reflexively by the application of a sugar solution to the antenna or the tarsi (unconditional stimulus), can be obtained by presentation of an odor (conditional stimulus), initially non-significant, after association of this conditional stimulus and the unconditional stimulus.
