'Nam Alsidis hic par in omnibus': Rhetorical Strategies in Motets in Honour of Gaston III

Résumé

If Gaston III, known as Fébus, Count of Foix from 1343 to 1391, is famous for his remarkable political skills during the Hundred Years’ War, his court was also the centre of a rich artistic production. Among the lyrical works paying tribute to the Pyrenean prince, no less than three isorhythmic motets composed in the second half of the century feature sophisticated Latin, rich in metaphors and literary references. This paper examines the various rhetorical strategies used to praise Gaston III in these motets to shed light on the underlying principles of this remarkable laudatory tradition.
