Getting out of the library: the issues involved in out-of-home heritage initiatives. Travelling heritage in Chambéry
The "Patrimoine Voyageur" (Travelling Heritage) initiative, aimed at a wider public, was born in Chambéry's public libraries out of a dual questioning process: how can written heritage be made visible and accessible? How, and with what kind of results, can we bring people who are far removed from the library and even more so from written heritage, into contact with heritage objects? In a word, how and why should we combat the "heritage divide"? Based on these questions, the aim is to reflect on the possibility of investing written heritage with a social role, by placing it at the service of cultural democratization.
This chapter retraces the genesis of the "travelling heritage" program in Chambéry's libraries, explaining the societal issues associated with written heritage and then providing instructions for setting up these programs.
