Déterminisme environnemental et influence culturelle : la vision de l’étranger chez Galien
Résumé
This paper argues that Galen sees Hellenism as a cultural phenomenon that is open to the contribution of foreigners, if they share the ideals of the Greek παιδεία. “Hellenism” is not an identity based on territorial origins, but a Weltanschauung that provides its adherents – be they Greek or foreigners – with a high social status: the new Hellenistic elite knows no geographical borders. In so doing, Galen distances himself from the geographical determinism whereby moral and intellectual virtues are connected to the weather and to geographical identities.
