The notion of otherness in the encyclical Laudato Si’

La notion d'altérité dans Laudato Si'

Résumé

“Laudato si’, mi’ Signore”, “Praise be to you, my Lord”, sang St Francis of Assisi. "Praise be to you, my Lord, for our mother the earth, which sustains and governs us, and produces various fruits with coloured flowers and grass." These are the first words of Laudato Si', Pope Francis' encyclical addressed to all believers and subtitled “For the Safeguarding of the Common House”. Taking up this beautiful hymn of Saint Francis, the Pope reminds us that our common home is like a sister with whom we share life and like a mother, beautiful, who welcomes us with open arms. His invitation to praise resounds like a call to change one’s gaze on and respect for creation as a whole. In this sense, the encyclical Laudato Si’ is a hymn to creation; but it is not only that. Set in the context of an emergency, that of the ecological crisis, this encyclical was a great success because it is both a cry of alarm in front of the ecological crisis and a call to individual and collective responsibility. This dense and rich text, addressed to all humanity and especially to believers, deserves to be better known and worked on. Our project here is to show its interest for a broad and thorough reflection on otherness. To this end, two key concepts will hold our attention: «integral ecology» and «everything is linked». They will allow us to show how this text can help to think about the notion of otherness in several dimensions.
