Superheroes vs supervillains? From superpower to agency in Adjei-Brenyah’s “Through the Flash” (Friday Black, 2018)

Résumé

This paper aimed to show how Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah, in “Through the Flash” (Friday Black, 2018) uses superhero and time loop tropes to stage diegetic and extratextual cycles of violence regarding Ama’s story – from superhero to supervillain and back – and American history – from the Cold War and its nuclear scares to the War on Terror and use of torture. This paper argued that “Through the Flash” subverts expectations regarding superhero tropes and time loop narratives by refusing to stage resolution as a way to empower the reader’s agency and encourage them to break the loops.
