The Collections of Islamic Artifacts from Samarra in France

Résumé

This paper proposes to explore the history of items from Samarra held in France, thus complementing ongoing research on the history of Samarra collections which are scattered all over the world. It studies the role of two French archaeologists in the discovery of the Abbasid city and the development of a collection of Samarra material in the Louvre museum after a gift from the British Museum.
